Martin Luther Homes recognised by aged care peak body

Tuesday, February 26, 2019

Martin Luther Homes are proud to announce that we have been recognised for our work in the aged care sector at the LASA Excellence in Age Services Awards.

We were nominated and named finalists for the Rising Star as well as Organisation Award Vic/Tas. The 2019 Tri-State Conference was organised and hosted by Leading Age Services Australia (LASA), which is the national peak body representing all providers of age services across residential care, home care, and retirement living.

Martin Luther Homes CEO, Birgit Goetz, was accompanied by our Director of Clinical Services, June Hodge, and by our nurse Eva Panousopoulos who was nominated as a ‘Rising Star’ of the aged care sector.

“To be recognised a second year in a row for our innovative Care Apartment© concept was yet another confirmation that we are on the right track. We constantly try to re-invent ourselves and our services. It is great to see that our industry peers agree, and that the strong focus on our residents is a winning strategy.”

Director of Clinical Services, June Hodge, agrees and she also stressed how moving it was to see one of her most outstanding nurses stand up on the podium. Eva Panousopoulos joined Martin Luther Homes just over a year ago and she has quickly become a successful leader who inspires others to always give their best, every day.

“We knew from the start that Eva would be our Rising Star, regardless of the outcome tonight. People like her are the backbone of our aged care centre and of the industry as a whole.”Eva Panousopoulos (2nd from left) is confirmed as a finalist for the Rising Star Award.

LASA CEO Sean Rooney congratulated all nominees, finalists, and winners for their outstanding efforts and the contributions they make daily, not only to the industry but to the lives of the older Australians.

“Our industry has countless passionate professionals, volunteers and organisations who don’t generally look for thanks or praise. It is their dedication and professionalism that make up the backbone of our industry,” Mr Rooney said.

Martin Luther Homes CEO, Birgit Goetz, also congratulated the winners of the night and she confirmed that award ceremonies are not only a great event to celebrate the work we are all passionate about, but to also exchange views and experiences with other aged care sector leaders.

We are very grateful for the past twelve months, for the memories shared and the conversations that enriched us all. We are looking forward to 2019, which is going to be an even busier year, with the new wing of our aged care facility opening and many more residents and staff joining us.

However before the start of the new year, we are setting up the tables for a very special Christmas lunch. Our residents, their friends and family, are invited to book a table by December 20. Booking is essential!

Knox Mayor embraces Martin Luther Homes

Tuesday, June 05, 2018

Martin Luther Homes staff and residents had a fantastic time at the recently held Knox Active Ageing Expo. It was the first time Knox City Council put on this event and we believe it was an outstanding success and drawcard for senior citizens in the outer east of Melbourne.

Martin Luther Homes was represented with an engaging stall by Deputy Clinical Manager Steven Yan and Customer Liaison Officer Evelin Martin. Both were not only delighted by the attention they had received from many locals, who wanted to know more about the services and facilities Martin Luther Homes provides, but also by the time Knox Mayor John Mortimore dedicated to our stall. Mortimore literally embraced our staff and confirmed that, as a long-term Boronia/Basin resident, he knows our home all too well.Steven Yan, Knox Mayor John Mortimore & Evelin Martin.

Yet, not only staff were telling interested visitors more about the benefits of choosing Martin Luther Homes as an ideal place to retire, but also our residents themselves. Lifestyle Coordinator Birgit Gisler was in charge of organising transport for residents to get to the expo safely. She confirmed that the Martin Luther Homes bus was booked out quickly and that residents truly enjoyed the information provided at the many exhibition stalls that were all centred around the aged care industry including health, activities as well as volunteering. Another highlight, however, were the engaging talks and the beautiful catering that was provided for exhibitors and visitors alike. Hopefully, there will be another Active Ageing Expo next year that we are more than happy to participate in.

German Week at Martin Luther Homes

Monday, March 26, 2018

It was a first for all, when the Australian-German Welfare Society announced that a German Week will take place in March. After successful launches in Brisbane and Sydney, it was now Melbourne’s turn to showcase some of the many great organisations and clubs that represent the German community in Victoria.

Without hesitation, MLH CEO Birgit Goetz decided to participate in the event by organising an open day at the picturesque Boronia site, in Melbourne’s outer east. Although the short notice and the mid-week timeslot for the open day presented a challenge, staff, management and residents pulled their resources together to put on a great event and friendly reception for locals, potential staff members and, most importantly, future residents.

Customer Liaison Officer Evelin Martin was not only happy with the public’s interest in everything MLH has to offer, but she was also particularly thrilled about the “quality” of the visitors on open day. After only a few tours of the facilities, Ms Martin confirmed that up to two independent living units were already spoken for by lunch time.

However, the open day as part of German Week did not only attract visitors who were interested in making the beautiful retirement village at the foothills of Mount Dandenong their future home, but also a media representative, who covered the event on behalf of national broadcaster SBS.

Reporter André Mathias spoke to residents to find out why they chose to spend their retirement at this unique place that is more like a village than a conventional aged care facility. The journalist also spoke with General Manager Ralf Pelz, who told him that his new role at MLH is a new challenge that he particularly enjoys, due to the location of his new workplace and its open-minded multicultural nature.

Although the open day 2018 went by much too quickly, the week of excitement continued at MLH with a special visitor from Canberra. German ambassador Dr Anna Prinz paid the home a visit to meet, among others, resident Clara Werner, who will turn 102 years of age in May, and who still enjoys her daily life in her own unit, surrounded by friends and like-minded neighbours.

However, in addition to her official representative duties, Dr Prinz didn’t shy away from joining in a lively sing-along with Pastor Christoph Dielmann, who put together a musical journey through Germany. In addition to German folk classics, English chants could also be heard across the centre, including the all-time favourite ‘when saints go marching in’.

MLH’s participation in Melbourne’s inaugural German Week was a successful event that brought together residents, staff, and the wider community for two joyous events. MLH CEO Birgit Goetz confirmed that this first instalment will surely be followed up by another event in the coming years.
