To our residents, staff and the wider community,

The sad passing of a woman who lived in our independent living retirement village today has saddened all our staff, residents and families. On behalf of everyone at Martin Luther Homes we extend our deepest sympathies to family and friends.

Martin Luther Homes will fully cooperate with police to assist them with their inquires.

We won’t be commenting further at this time and request privacy for our residents and their families at this sad time.

Martin Luther Homes launches STRC program

Martin Luther Homes now provides Short-Term Restorative Care (STRC). Short-Term Restorative Care is a new goal-oriented program that provides early intervention care for older people.

It aims at keeping the clients independent by reversing and/or slowing functional health decline. Its ultimate goal is to help recipients to regain their autonomy and to prevent them from relying on long-term care.

The STRC is delivered in the form of a tailored, multidisciplinary package of services. These include physiotherapy, social work, nursing support, personal care, and the provision of new technologies that make your life easier. The STRC service is limited to a maximum of 56 days and can be delivered at Martin Luther Homes’ facilities or in the comfort of the client’s home.

Martin Luther Homes recognised by aged care peak body

Martin Luther Homes are proud to announce that we have been recognised for our work in the aged care sector at the LASA Excellence in Age Services Awards.

We were nominated and named finalists for the Rising Star as well as Organisation Award Vic/Tas. The 2019 Tri-State Conference was organised and hosted by Leading Age Services Australia (LASA), which is the national peak body representing all providers of age services across residential care, home care, and retirement living.

Martin Luther Homes CEO, Birgit Goetz, was accompanied by our Director of Clinical Services, June Hodge, and by our nurse Eva Panousopoulos who was nominated as a ‘Rising Star’ of the aged care sector.

“To be recognised a second year in a row for our innovative Care Apartment© concept was yet another confirmation that we are on the right track. We constantly try to re-invent ourselves and our services. It is great to see that our industry peers agree, and that the strong focus on our residents is a winning strategy.”

Director of Clinical Services, June Hodge, agrees and she also stressed how moving it was to see one of her most outstanding nurses stand up on the podium. Eva Panousopoulos joined Martin Luther Homes just over a year ago and she has quickly become a successful leader who inspires others to always give their best, every day.

“We knew from the start that Eva would be our Rising Star, regardless of the outcome tonight. People like her are the backbone of our aged care centre and of the industry as a whole.”Eva Panousopoulos (2nd from left) is confirmed as a finalist for the Rising Star Award.

LASA CEO Sean Rooney congratulated all nominees, finalists, and winners for their outstanding efforts and the contributions they make daily, not only to the industry but to the lives of the older Australians.

“Our industry has countless passionate professionals, volunteers and organisations who don’t generally look for thanks or praise. It is their dedication and professionalism that make up the backbone of our industry,” Mr Rooney said.

Martin Luther Homes CEO, Birgit Goetz, also congratulated the winners of the night and she confirmed that award ceremonies are not only a great event to celebrate the work we are all passionate about, but to also exchange views and experiences with other aged care sector leaders.

The new year will be a big one for Martin Luther Homes, as we are expanding our facilities. New residents also mean that we require more passionate and skilled people to join our team. So, always keep an eye out on our website or on our Linkedin Account to find out if we have the right position for you!

This is your chance to join our physiotherapy team. You will work under supervision but also get the opportunity to grow in your role and make it your own.


Currently, we are recruiting a nurse (RN grade 2/ EEN) as well as a new physiotherapist. Both positions are part-time and located at our nursing home in Boronia/ The Basin.

Season's Greetings and a meal not to be missed

Martin Luther Homes wishes all its residents, their families and friends, and our lovely staff a wonderful Christmas and a Happy New Year.

We are very grateful for the past twelve months, for the memories shared and the conversations that enriched us all. We are looking forward to 2019, which is going to be an even busier year, with the new wing of our aged care facility opening and many more residents and staff joining us.

However before the start of the new year, we are setting up the tables for a very special Christmas lunch. Our residents, their friends and family, are invited to book a table by December 20. Booking is essential!

Our CEO Birgit Goetz has an important question to ask you.

“I have been working for Martin Luther Homes, its residents and our staff for over seven years now and one aspect of my work keeps amazing me again and again. You wonder what it is?

It is the passion you have for Martin Luther Homes. This passion comes with an awareness that we are different, when compared to other retirement villages and nursing homes. There is something that makes us special. But what exactly is it?

In order to make the right decisions for the future of Martin Luther Homes, our board and I want to focus on what matters to you.

What does Martin Luther Homes mean to you?

Everyone who works with us, who lives at our beautiful facility or anyone who was there at the very beginning, in the 1950s when Martin Luther Homes was merely a dream and a bold project, will surely have an experience or story worth sharing.

Attention: Changes to Emergency Exit

In relation to the building occurring during 2018/2019 at Arcadia Avenue. Please note that the fire exit at Arcadia Avenue is still operating, however, the Arcadia glass doors will be in the ‘OFF’ mode and the door will not open for general access of staff, residents and visitors except in an emergency such as fire when the door will open automatically.

You won't be able to gain access through Arcadia Avenue during construction

In an emergency staff, residents and visitors must follow the pathway from the Arcadia glass doors to the assembly area outside of the 'bunker', our maintenance building.

Access to all houses within Martin Luther Homes from Monday 15 October will be through Jensen House.

Message from the CEO

 

To: Residents, families, Staff and friends of Martin Luther Homes

Re: ABC Four Corners ‘Who Cares?’ program

The entire aged care sector has undergone challenging and turbulent weeks. The ABC’s Four Corners program has dedicated two programs to abuse cases that occurred in a number of aged care centres around the country. Previously, the Federal Parliament in Canberra had passed The Aged Care (Single Quality Framework) Reform Bill 2018, the most comprehensive upgrade to aged care standards in twenty years and the establishment of the new independent Aged Care Safety and Quality Commissionwhich comes into force on 1 January 2019. Most importantly, however, is the announcement of a Royal Commission by Prime Minister Scott Morrison.

 

I believe that it is my responsibility as the CEO of Martin Luther Homes to answer any questions that might arise from the current media coverage. Of course, I have also watched the two Four Corners episodes and I was just as shocked, as anyone would be when seeing that elderly people are being mistreated at the hands of staff that have a duty of care and that ought to look after them. Instead, they harmed the most vulnerable people. Any form of abuse is inexcusable! I was truly disappointed to find out that there are still aged care providers that break the law by clearly disrespecting the rights and dignity of their residents. I therefore strongly support the establishment of the Royal Commission to expose the shortfalls and to refer the people responsible to the courts. One can only hope that the Royal Commission, alongside the many reforms that are already underway, will push the irresponsible providers out of our industry and that more accountability and transparency will be the result of this far-reaching investigation.

 

Long before the intensified media focus on our industry, the leadership team at Martin Luther Homes made it their priority to ensure that we uphold our high standards of care and that our residents continue to be our first priority. Over decades, we have developed a strong culture and work ethic that prevents even the slightest failings. These high standards are set and lived by management and are upheld on all other staff levels. The personalised high-quality care we promote is reviewed daily through supervisors and you can rest assured that all of our staff have undergone rigorous assessments, are fully trained, and must participate in mandatory training, refreshers and professional development courses.

 

We have only recently been named ‘Aged Care Provider of the Year (Vic) 2018’ by ACSA and we do everything in our power to defend this prestigious title next year. As a not-for-profit aged care provider, we re-invest every Dollar back into our facilities, lifestyle programs, and, most importantly, toward the training and upskilling of our nurses and carers.
